When you scroll through Instagram, there are so many beautiful people with gorgeous clear skin, living their best life eating cupcakes and sipping on caramel frappuccinos in Starbucks. My skin got worse and worse throughout the years of 14-20. When I scrolled through social media, I felt like I was cursed with bad skin and I wanted to hide underneath a pile of blankets. It’s crazy how insecure something as simple as your skin can make you feel about yourself. I used to think “well, I drink lots of water, I wash my face every day, I moisturise, I do everything people say, yet my skin still hates me”. I went to a dermatologist but nothing helped. So I decided to stop stressing about it because I just couldn’t help what was happening to my skin and I was done crying about it. Until this routine completely saved it.
Important things to mention:
- It’s normal to get teenage acne and that was definitely playing a big part of my skin issues, so just bare that in mind!
- I normally take my make-up off in the shower. I have no idea if this contributes to my happier and better skin but it definitely makes the whole routine less messy!
- I haven’t changed up the routine/products in 2 years and I truly believe all of these products work together but not apart.
1. Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash (100% Soap Free)
I used to take my make-up off with make-up wipes far too often. I’ve realised now that they still leave some product left on your skin, which can cause it to break out. Being a student, I didn’t want to invest my whole rent on a face wash, so when I saw this Simple product on sale, it went straight in my basket.
It has a light fresh scent, nothing too disturbing. It’s a gel consistency and it makes my make-up just glide off of my face while being really calming and perfect for sensitive skin. I wet my face, then rub some of this gel around my face (including my eyes) and then rinse it off. Yup, just as simple as that. And it works! However, since I want to be absolutely sure that all of my make-up is off, I move on to the next step – exfoliating.
2. Garnier Pure Active Intensive Daily Exfoliating Scrub
Yup, believe it or not, I bought it because it was on sale, and I am so glad I did. This is the only product that’s not by Simple (no, this post is not sponsored by Simple – I wish). This one is a little bit more harsh than the face wash, but the scrub particles actually feel like I’m giving myself a massage. They’re suuuuuper tiny so they don’t irritate my skin, which I love. I use it the same way I did with the face wash and it works wonders. I think this might be that miracle product that keeps all spots far far away from my face. After this step, there is no make-up left on my face whatsoever.
I use this product twice a day – as the second step of my routine in the evening and as the first step of my routine in the morning. I know you’re not necessarily supposed to use scrubs this often, but it works for me.
3. Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturiser
There’s not much to say about this. It’s just a good old simple, calming moisturiser. It doesn’t have a strong scent to it, which I like. It absorbs quite quickly and it has a lovely creamy consistency. I use the Rich version at night time after using the scrub and that pretty much completes my evening skincare routine! P.S. Even if you have oily skin, you should still moisturise! Trust me.
4. Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser
This is kind of like the Rich moisturiser, but lighter in consistency and it absorbs pretty much instantly! Hence, I use this in the morning after using the scrub. I absolutely love this moisturiser as there is nothing worse than putting make-up on sticky skin, yuck.
5. Witch Naturally Clear Blemish Gel
Sometimes if I’ve drank some fizzy drinks or eaten wayyyy too much cheese, I might still get the occasional spot. That’s when this bad boy comes in handy. Don’t touch your spots, don’t pick on them, just let them do their thing. Pop this gel on before you go to bed after you put on your moisturiser and let it do it’s magic. The spot will be gone in a couple of days. If you keep irritating your spots, they are likely to leave scars, so just leave them be (yes, I know it’s hard). I got this product from Poundland… can you freakin believe it? But it works!
I know this routine might not work for everyone but I know how desperate I was to find a solution for my problematic skin. Let me know if you use any of these products and how they work for you! I really hope this helps or at least shows you that your skin won’t be bad forever and that behind the pretty Instagrams, we are all struggling with our own issues.
Be kind, be humble.
Your skin looks amazing! Simple products bring me out in a rash, but I love Garnier scrubs / washes, even if they are the corporate devil!
